Archaeological Sites in Sitia - Palekastro - Ierapetra:

The Palace of Zakros is located 26 kms south of Palekastro. Its position shelters it from the dangerously strong north winds that pass
Cape Sidero on the north-east tip of Crete...
The Bronze Age town, whose original name is not known, is situated at Rousolakkos, two kilometres from the village of Palekastro on a spectacular coastline.

Makri Gialos, on the south coast, 38 kms from Sitia and 25 kms from lerapetra, is the coastal settlement of the Agios Stephanos community. It was not possible that the ancients could have ignored such a wonderful site.

On a low hill (Petras-h. 40 m.) by the sea close to Sitia town, lies an important Minoan settlement. It had a large harbour and was the

This is an area of great archaeological interest because, in addition to various chance finds and signs of habitation in the cave of Koufoto
on the shore, a large necropolis came to light near the cave (at a place now known as Patima).

The village of Voila is 1km away from the village of Handras. It is a medieval deserted village protected by the Archaeological Offices of Eastern Crete.

In the Hamezi area, 11 km from Sitia on a conical-shaped hill known as Souvloto Mouri (which means pointed- or sharp - faced), is the only oval house so far discovered of the Middle Minoan period.

The Minoan civilisation became famous at the beginning of our century because of the excavations by Sir Arthur Evans. It was like unearthing from the nebulae of the past, a new mythical world,
unknown until then but very ravishing.
